I keep coming back to the idea of a line that never quite meets itself. Somewhere in making this, closing the loop started to feel wrong — like I'd be shutting a door that needed to stay open just a little. So I left a gap. Not infinity as something you're stuck inside, but infinity as a shape still becoming itself.
Where it comes from:
I grew up in Sardinia, where white is almost a colour of its own in the textile tradition there — carpets in wool, woven with different textures and heights across the same surface. My technique isn't the same as the weaving I grew up around, but the inspiration is. One of my earliest memories is watching my aunt at a huge wooden loom, hands moving without looking. I didn't understand, then, that I was watching something I'd end up doing myself, just differently.
I make these slowly. Partly because that's what the technique asks of me, and partly because slow is what my own head needs — tufting is one of the only things that quiets an ADHD brain that's otherwise always somewhere else. Living away from Italy has only made all of this feel more necessary, not less. This piece is one of the most direct line I've drawn yet between where I'm from and what I make now.
The details
- Size: 153 x 103cm, framed and ready to hang
- Material: 100% wool, natural white
- Technique: hand-tufted, two pile heights for texture and shadow
- Frame: wooden
- One of one — every reproduction of this piece will be slightly different from the original
- Unless the title says 'READY TO SHIP', please allow 2 to 6 weeks for me to recreate the piece for you
Care
Vacuum gently on a low setting when needed. Keep out of strong, direct, prolonged sunlight to preserve the natural white. Wool is naturally durable and ages beautifully — it will not flatten or yellow the way synthetic fibers do.
A note
If you're drawn to this piece but are thinking about a size, shape, or story specific to your own wall, I take on a limited number of custom commissions each year, developed through a design consultation. Message me and I'll tell you more.
